It is mainly obtained from pinene in the production of pinane, 3, 7-dimethyl-octadiene, 1,6- and citronellal or be prepared by catalytic dehydrogenation of citronellol in the presence of lead chromium catalyst.
Citronellol, or dihydrogeraniol, is a natural acyclic monoterpenoid. Both enantiomers occur in nature. It is found in citronella oils, including Cymbopogon nardus (50%), is the more common isomer. (−)-Citronellol is found in the oils of rose (18–55%) and Pelargonium geraniums.
Citronellol can be prepared by hydrogenation of geraniol or nerol.
Citronellol has multiple applications in the industry.
Citronellyl Formate is a light yellow transparent liquid with sweet rose, myrcia aroma and slightly with lemon, cucumber and other fresh green fragrance. It is found in geranium oil and is obtained by esterification of formic acid and citronol. It can also be extracted from citronella essential oil, Mexican cypress, bourbon rose and other natural materials. It’s widely used in a variety of flower fragrance daily flavor and apple, sweet orange, peach, plum and other edible flavors.
Citronellyl Nitrile is a clear colorless liquid with lemon and citrus odor. It is prepared by using citronellal as raw material to produce aldehyde oxime by oximation reaction, and then through heating dehydration in the presence of acetic anhydride. Citronellyl Nitrile is used extensively as a fragrance ingredient. Citronellyl Nitrile is the substitute of citronellal.

Creosol is mainly used in the flavor, medical and intermedium of organic synthesis
Crude Tall Oil (CTO) is a by-product of the kraft pulping process used by many paper mills. Tall oil soap is collected at the mills and then acidulated to make crude tall oil. It is a mixture of fatty acids, rosin and other neutral materials and forms water-in-oil emulsions and stabilizes mud systems at high bottom-hole temperatures. The CTO can then be further refined through the fractionation process to separate it into the components of tall oil fatty acid, tall oil rosin, distilled tall oil, pitch and heads. (GP-CTO)
Natural linalool is a monoterpenoid that found in many plants, mainly in Brazilian rose and Chinese camphor.
