Plant Extracts for Animal Feed Additives

Phytogenics, EOs Ingredients (Natural-identical)

Regulation (EC) 1831/2003

The animal‑feed additives market is growing rapidly in response to demands for food safety, animal welfare and environmental protection. Antibiotic‑free feed production is a clear trend, with plant‑extract additives becoming key components in many diets. Under Regulation (EC) No 1831/20031, feed additives are classified2 as (a) Technological Additives. (b) Sensory Additives. (c) Nutritional Additives. (d) Zootechnical Additives. (e) Coccidiostats and histomonostats. Authorised functions3 include improving feed characteristics and animal‑product quality, enhancing the colour of ornamental fish and birds, meeting animals’ nutritional needs, favourably affecting the environmental consequences of animal production, improving performance or welfare (for example via gut‑flora stabilisation), and providing coccidiostatic or histomonostatic effects.

Plant Extracts Chemicals for Feed Additives Market

Plant extracts, also known as phytogenic feed additives, are an important application area in animal nutrition. One common approach is to blend whole or dried herbs directly into feed without extraction, producing cost‑effective products that are straightforward to manufacture for livestock management.

Another option is to use plant essential oils (EOs), which are complex mixtures of volatile compounds (e.g. monomer or natural essential oil) obtained by steam distillation or solvent extraction; in some cases, nature‑identical actives such as thymol or cinnamaldehyde are employed to stabilise and standardise composition.

Types of Natural Plant Extracts for Animal Feed:

  • Sugar
  • Volatile oil
  • Glucosides

Feed Application of EOs & Plant Monomers

Essential oils (EOs) can be obtained from herbs and other botanicals such as oregano, thyme, parsley, eucalyptus, cumin, pine needles, Houttuynia, Artemisia and bay leaves. Compared with biotechnological approaches using enzyme preparations, prebiotics or functional proteins and peptides, essential oils deliver plant bioactives directly through the feed, with absorption after ingestion mediating the botanical effects4.

Application of plant extracts additives in livestock & poultry production:

  • Change the teste and odor of feed materials
  • Stimulate the glossopharyngeal nerves of livestock and poultry, improve saliva secretion and appetite
  • Improve resistance
  • Improve the delivery rate
  • Improve the number of litter
  • Improve the daily gain
  • Improve feed return
