SIS/SBS BASED HMA
Thinner, softer and leak-free diapers for babies are the market trend as customer demands. Diaper manufacturers are making investments in innovation to the better use of elastics and using new core technology to allow for better liquid distribution.
Hygiene adhesive is a kind of SIS/SBS based HMA, can be used in absorbent sanitary baby diapers. The types are identified as backsheet adhesives, construction adhesives, leg, and cuff elastic adhesives, wetness indicator adhesives, core adhesives, landing tape and stretch ear adhesives. Adhesives provide adhesion and elastic ability to each component of the diaper. How to choose a right adhesion solution, it will effect on strength, lightweight, elastic and cost for the baby care products.
Adhesives & Nonwovens in Diaper
In baby care market, there are two main types of adhesion system. SBC based polymers adhesive includes Styrene butadiene styrene (SBS), Styrene isoprene styrene (SIS), Styrene-ethylene/butylene styrene (SEBS) and Styrene-ethylene/propylene styrene (SEPS). SEBS is the hydrogenated form of SBS, SEPS is the hydrogenated form of SIS.
The disposable hygiene products use SIS/SBS based HMAs for the abilities to retain flexibility and elasticity at low temperature. They have well value in cost, and with benefits of high initial tack strength, while tend to harden (and lose adhesion) over time, especially exposed to sunlight and weather.
The other adhesion system is APAO based adhesive. Amorphous polyalpha olefins (APAO) system is non-crystalline adhesives that remain soft, tacky, and flexible giving longer open time and good adhesion.
It provides advanced moisture resistance, chemical resistance and heat resistance, especially the slight odour and low VOCs compared to SBC based adhesives. The key players of APAO polymers include Evonik, Eastman, REXtac and Qida Chemical.
