Hydrogenated Terpene Resins

Derived from specific terpene monomers such as α‑pinene, β‑pinene, limonene or 3‑carene and selectively hydrogenated, these resins offer a bio‑based foundation that outperforms modified rosin resins in colour stability, low odour and oxidation/weathering resistance. The hydrogenation step saturates olefinic bonds, further enhancing thermal and oxidative stability while preserving low viscosity and good elastomer compatibility. This combination delivers dependable performance where long‑term appearance and durability are critical.

In hot‑melt and pressure‑sensitive adhesives, hydrogenated terpene polymers and terpene phenolic resins provide efficient, clean tackification across a wide range of elastomer systems. Their stability under heat, light and ageing helps to maintain tack, peel and cohesion over the full lifetime of the end‑use article, from hygiene products and medical tapes to demanding packaging and technical laminates.

Learn the differences between polyterpene resins prepared from different pinene monomers.

Major application

  • Hot‑melt and pressure‑sensitive adhesives
    • Hygiene hot‑melt adhesives for baby diapers and feminine care
    • Medical tapes and skin‑contact pressure‑sensitive adhesives
    • Packaging and labelling hot‑melt systems
      • Note: Light colour and low odour make hydrogenated terpene phenolic resins particularly attractive where consumer comfort and regulatory compliance are critical.
  • General‑purpose hot‑melt and PSA systems
    • SIS/SBS‑based label and tape adhesives
    • Technical tapes and industrial assembly adhesives
      • Note: Hydrogenated terpene polymers offer versatile tackification and good compatibility with a wide range of elastomers.
  • Rubber modification
    • Tyres and technical rubber goods requiring controlled tack and processability
      • Note: Hydrogenated terpene polymers help adjust tack and rheology during mixing and converting, without compromising ageing resistance.
