Hydrogenated Rosin Resins
In the industry it is well understood that gum rosin comes with two persistent challenges. Its abietic‑acid‑rich resin contains conjugated double bonds, which oxidise easily and push the colour towards darker shades, limiting where it can be used. It also has a marked tendency to crystallise: once crystallised, the melt shows a high melting point and is difficult to saponify, and in many solvents it can recrystallise as flocculent or fine particles. In adhesives this can mean loss of transparency and visible haze, while in soldering fluxes crystallised rosin may lead to local polymerisation after soldering, reduced clarity and residues that are harder to clean away.
Hydrogenation offers a practical way to overcome these drawbacks while keeping the pine‑based, bio‑derived origin. Through catalytic hydrogenation, distillation and careful filtration, gum rosin can be transformed into a hydrogenated rosin resin with a much lower tendency to crystallise, a naturally lighter colour that can be taken close to colourless, and consistently low ash content. At the same time, the saturated structure significantly improves resistance to oxidation, weathering and heat, giving formulators a more stable, longer‑lasting building block for adhesives, inks, coatings and flux systems that need to look clear and perform reliably over time.

Major application
- Hot‑melt and pressure‑sensitive adhesive tackifiers
- Case and carton sealing hot‑melt adhesives
- Bookbinding and woodworking adhesives
- Label and tape pressure‑sensitive adhesives
- Hygiene adhesives for nappies and sanitary products
- Note: Hydrogenated rosin and its esters deliver light colour, dependable tack and better ageing behaviour in long‑term use.
- Food contact and gum base
- Chewing gum base and confectionery systems
- Food‑grade coatings and protective films
- Note: Bio‑based glycerol esters of hydrogenated rosin combine established regulatory acceptance with clean sensory performance.
- Personal care and cosmetics
- Film‑formers and tackifiers in lipsticks, lip gloss and mascaras
- Fixatives and structuring agents in fragrance and oil‑phase systems
- Cosmetic‑grade hydrogenated rosin esters support “naturally derived” positioning with enhanced colour and weathering stability.
- Inks and speciality coatings
- Gravure and flexographic printing ink binders
- High‑gloss inks and baking enamels using high‑softening‑point esters
- Water‑resistant and speciality coatings based on modified hydrogenated rosin
- Note: Improved oxidation resistance helps maintain gloss, colour and film integrity under outdoor or high‑load conditions.
