Hydrogenated Resins Scheme

Hydrogenation of rosin‑modified resins selectively saturates the double bonds present in the rosin backbone, which markedly lightens the colour (reducing Gardner values from >5 to near‑colourless) and diminishes the characteristic acidic odour. The resulting saturated structure exhibits improved resistance to oxidative yellowing and weathering, while retaining good compatibility with common polymer systems such as EVA, SBS and SIS, thereby preserving adhesion performance in hot‑melt and pressure‑sensitive formulations.

Hydrogenation of terpene‑derived resins follows a similar principle: the olefinic bonds in monomers such as α‑pinene, β‑pinene, limonene or 3‑carene are saturated, producing resins that transition from a dark hue to a light or colourless appearance and develop a low‑odour profile. This process markedly enhances oxidation and weathering stability, and the hydrogenated terpene resins maintain excellent elastomer compatibility, allowing them to function effectively in demanding applications ranging from hygiene tapes to technical laminates while originating from a renewable, bio‑based feedstock.

Hydrogenated Scheme Features

  • Light to colourless appearance (Gardner colour < 1)
  • Low odour profile, suitable for scent‑sensitive applications
  • Superior oxidation and weathering resistance, prolonging service life
  • Enhanced thermal stability due to saturated bond structure
  • Good compatibility with elastomers such as EVA, SBS, SIS and other polymer systems
  • Bio‑based origin when derived from terpene monomers, supporting sustainability goals
