Cooling Intensity & Duration (based on menthol)

150, about 6 minutes.

Cooling Area

Throat, roof of the mouth, back of the mouth, and back of the tongue.

Our Certification

KOSHER ,HALAL,REACH ready.

Recommended Application

1. When using a larger quantity, a small amount of sweetener can be added to mask the bitterness

2. It works even better when mixed with peppermint oil, resulting in a more impactful, refreshing, and long-lasting aroma.

3. Mainly used in medicine, oral care, throat lozenges, e-cigarettes, etc.

Cooling Intensity & Duration (based on menthol)

400, about 10 minutes

Cooling Area

Mainly concentrated on the top of the mouth and the back of the tongue.

Our Certification

KOSHER ,HALAL ready.

Recommended Application

1. When used in conjunction with peppermint oil or menthol, the cooling sensation is significantly enhanced.

2. Primarily used in products such as hard candy, throat lozenges, and toothpaste.

Cooling Intensity & Duration (based on menthol)

450, about 12 minutes.

Cooling Area

It typically acts inside the mouth and on the skin.

Our Certification

Testing.

Recommended Application

1. WS-10 is an easily added liquid that creates a cooling system by combining the sensations of WS-3, WS-23, and menthyl lactate with some additional ingredients without the need for solvents or dilution systems. It is primarily used in everyday fragrances.

2. Suitable for oral and cosmetic applications, its appropriate strength provides a balanced and comprehensive cooling sensation.

3. Medically used in sprays such as sedatives and analgesics.

Cooling Intensity & Duration (based on menthol)

350, about 36 minutes

Cooling Area

The front of the tongue, the entire oral mucosa, and the larynx.

Our Certification

KOSHER ready.

Recommended Application

1. Typically paired with other WS products for the strongest initial cooling and significantly longer-lasting effect; alone, it shows poor solubility, noticeable bitterness, and reduced cooling intensity.

2. WS-12 withstands heat up to 200°C without losing cooling power; serves as mint flavouring in oral care, candies, and chewing gum, while low concentrations enhance freshness in berry, citrus, and fruit flavours.

Cooling Intensity & Duration (based on menthol)

75, about 8 minutes.

Cooling Area

In front of the tongue and mouth.

Our Certification

KOSHER ,HALAL,REACH.

Recommended Application

1. Poorly soluble in room-temperature water but soluble in hot water; dissolves in propylene glycol for room-temperature water solubility, and soluble in alcohol and oils.

2. WS-23’s cooling is slightly weaker than WS-3 but smoother, without burning, numbness, or irritation; sensory tests show it cooler than menthol.

3. Pulverisation disrupts crystals for finer powder, easing addition to compressed candies—most commercial ones and candy rings use WS-23, common in saliva products and beverages.

Cooling Intensity & Duration (based on menthol)

41, about 10~20 minutes

Cooling Area

MGA primarily cools the throat’s back.

Our Certification

Testings.

Recommended Application

1. Available as racemic or levorotatory forms; commercial levo-MGA (Medroxymentol Glyceryl Acetate) is produced via acid-catalysed dehydration condensation of menthone and glycerol.

2. Milder and less irritating than menthyl lactate, menthol-free; delivers immediate, long-lasting cooling akin to traditional menthol.

3. Used in shampoos, shower gels, shaving products; also in cosmetics, tobacco, and peppermint stabiliser for cooling fragrances.

Case Study

NOTE. The following cases were collected and compiled from publicly available information. They do not imply any actual business relationship between the brands and products mentioned and our company.

Oral Care Applications

  • GENU® Gum Type RL-200 from Azelis®, formulated with WS-5, is a highly refined locust bean gum standardised with sucrose that delivers a refreshing, non-irritating cooling sensation—free from any stinging or sharpness. By combining WS-5 with this premium gum base, the formulation enhances mouthfeel and texture in chewing gum without imparting unwanted flavours, offering a clean, long-lasting coolness most noticeable on the roof of the mouth and the back of the tongue. WS-5 provides approximately four times the cooling intensity of menthol, with effects lasting up to 10 minutes. Leveraging WS-5’s stability and GRAS status, the recommended usage level of 1,000–5,000 ppm enables an ice-fresh burst while maintaining the product’s structural integrity.
  • P&G® Oil-in-Water Emulsion Toothpaste featuring WS-3 and WS-5 incorporates these cooling agents at concentrations ranging from 0.001% to 5%. WS-3 delivers an immediate, clean cooling sensation at the back of the mouth and tongue—approximately 1.5 times stronger than menthol and lasting around six minutes—while WS-5 amplifies the effect to about 2.5 times menthol’s intensity, offering prolonged freshness without any bitterness. Together, they enhance sensory perception in oral care, improving both emulsion stability and consumer appeal. Their high potency allows effective performance at low use levels (500–4,000 ppm in toothpaste), significantly reducing the need for volatile menthol while delivering a smooth, powerful cooling experience.

Flavors & Beverages Applications

  • Takasago® WS-3 and WS-5 are used in beverages at typical levels of 10–50 ppm (up to 5%) to deliver clean, non-irritating cooling—WS-3 offers an immediate effect (1.5× menthol strength, ~6 min duration), while WS-5 provides longer-lasting, more intense coolness (2.5× menthol) without bitterness or volatility. Ideal for fruit juices, teas, soft drinks, energy drinks, and alcoholic beverages, they enhance flavour clarity, simulate ice-cold refreshment, and improve emulsion stability. Effective at low doses (500–4,000 ppm), they reduce reliance on menthol, extend perceived freshness (up to 10 minutes post-consumption), and pair seamlessly with sugar alcohols like xylitol. As GRAS-approved ingredients, they enable great-tasting, low-sugar functional drinks with no off-notes—supporting vitality and consumer appeal.

Chemical Modification Cases

  • Givaudan®’s WS-3 (N-ethyl-p-menthane-3-carboxamide) is being explored as a dual-action mosquito repellent prototype, leveraging its cooling and insect-repellent properties. Lab studies by Gautschi and Blondeau show that WS-3 and related N-substituted p-menthane carboxamides repel cockroaches as effectively as—or better than—DEET, with comparable activity against Aedes mosquitoes via TRPM8-mediated sensory disruption. Applied at low concentrations (0.5–2%), WS-3 delivers immediate, non-irritating skin cooling—1.5 times stronger than menthol and lasting over six minutes—while forming an odour-based barrier without menthol’s volatility or bitterness. In spray lotions and similar prototypes (e.g., Givaudan® patent US20040028714), it enhances user compliance through a refreshing “sensory shield,” reducing reliance on DEET. As a natural-identical, GRAS-approved ingredient (FEMA 3455), WS-3 offers a skin-friendly solution that bridges cosmetic appeal and public health.
