It is found naturally in the essential oils of Alpinia, Basil Leaf Oil, Longevity Flower Oil, etc. Methyl cinnamate is also can be prepared by esterification of cinnamic acid with methanol.

Methyl cinnamate is mainly used in the flavor and perfume industries.
