Rosin Derivatives

Rosin is the primary product of rosin sources. In China, rosin normally is meant Gum Rosin. There has been produced 661,200 metric tons of gum rosin that China contributed 76% of global production (Forecast, 2011). Wood Rosin and Tall Oil Rosin (TOR) are the main rosin-based products derived from rosin sources. The United States is the global leader in TOR production, commanding a 50% share of the market. The production of rosin in 2011 totaled 1,270,000 metric tons, with gum rosin, wood rosin, and TOR contributing 68%, 1%, and 31% respectively.

Gum rosin is derived from the oleoresin of living pine trees that are typically grown in the middle latitudes of countries like China, Brazil, Indonesia, India, and other parts of Latin America. TOR is a by-product that is derived from the kraft pulping method. The top manufacturing nations are the USA, Finland, Russia, Sweden, France, Japan, and Australia.

The of sustainable gum rosin processing today will have a transformative effect on the market dynamics. Charles Morris, president of the Pine Chemicals Association (PCA), reports that incorporating hybrid pine trees into production can result in an annual pine oleoresin yield of 6~8 kilograms, up from 2 kilograms. By adopting the new plantation system, the number of trees that can be harvested in a year can reach 7,000 to 10,000, a significant increase compared to the previous meager amount of 1,500 to 2,000 trees in a forest with difficult terrain and dense underbrush.

After six years, the hybrid trees in this renewable system can be tapped for resin and will continue to produce for the next 20 years before requiring replanting. The latest techniques are both financially beneficial and environmentally conscious.

The use of the plantation system has become widespread in Brazil and is now being introduced in China. The U.S. will occur slowly, but it could happen to supply gum rosin will improve.

Rosin Derivatives are comprised of several kinds of modified rosins, ester gums, rosin-based phenolic resins and other rosin resins. These three technology schemes are grouped as:
