丁香酚天然存在于香油、丁香罗勒油以及肉桂油等精油中。呈清澈或淡黄色液体，伴有浓烈的丁香香气和辛香。

目前合成丁香酚大多采用富含丁香酚的精油通过碱处理单离制得。在欧美，多以愈创木酚为原料，采用烯丙基氯、烯丙醇等直接将愈创木酚烯丙基化制得。
