Rosin Derived Scheme

By modifying and performing addition reactions on gum rosin, it is possible to prepare rosin derivative resin products with better performance, meeting the specific application needs in different industries.

  • Disproportionation, The disproportionation reaction alters the chemical structure of rosin by converting abietic acid, which has a cyclic structure, into dehydroabietic acid, which has a more open, non-cyclic structure.
    • Improved Physical Properties, Dehydroabietic acid generally has a higher thermal stability compared to some components of gum rosin.
  • Esterification, This reaction involves the carboxylic acid groups in gum rosin reacting with alcohols.
    • Improved Solubility
    • Reduced Brittleness
    • Reduced Acidity
  • Hydrogenation, learn more info on hydrogenation scheme.
  • Phenolic, Phenolic rosin resin is a hybrid resin formed by combining rosin with phenolic components.
    • Enhanced Properties, Phenolic rosin resin combines the adhesive and tackifying properties of rosin with the enhanced heat resistance and durability of phenolic resins.
    • The addition of phenolic components can improve the flexibility and heat resistance compared to crude rosin resin.

New Market Challenge

According to market reports, China produced about 380,000 tons of gum rosin between 2021 and 2022. The production in 2021 saw a significant decrease of 52% compared to 2020, which had a production of 790,000 tons. Since the statistics in 2015, there has been a rapid decline in gum rosin production. During the period from 2015 to 2017, the production was approximately 1,530,000 tons, 1,490,000 tons, and 1,400,000 tons, respectively. In 2021, China's gum rosin production decreased to just 1/4 of the production in 2015. In 2011, China accounted for 75% of global gum rosin production.

In 2021, China imported about 96,500 tons of gum rosin, resulting in an expanded trade deficit of 93,600 tons. In 2015, China had a trade surplus of 154,000 tons of gum rosin, but after 2018, China has started importing more gum rosin than it exports.

According to the statistics report for 2022, China still accounts for 50.72% of the global gum rosin production. If the current trend of declining production continues, Southeast Asia and South America are expected to gradually replace China as the major production areas for gum rosin.
