α-柏木烯由柏木油或杉木油分离出柏木脑后将富含倍半萜烯的剩余部分进行精密分馏制得。外观呈黄色液体，伴有木香。可广泛应用于日化香精配方中。也可进一步合成，制备乙酰基柏木烯、柏木酮等木香型香料。
