1,4桉叶素为单萜物质，伴有樟脑香气，天然存在于荜澄茄，春黄菊中。市售商品一般系由75%的1,4-桉叶素和15%，1，8-桉叶素组成。现中国已可通过脱水工艺从α- 松油醇工业制得。
